The Gizmo Guide - March 2007

Some regular housekeeping is essential if you want to keep your computer running smoothly. One of the easiest maintenance tasks you can perform is to defragment your hard drive. In this issue we show you how.

If you have a home network, one of its most useful features is the ability to share folders and files between the computers connected to it. This makes it possible to do things like play music on your laptop from an mp3 file stored on your desktop (which probably has more storage space). We've written you a step-by-step tutorial on sharing folders which we hope you put to good use.

For those of you in Canberra we have inluded an interview with Canberra team leader, Liam Gilligan. So you know who might be knocking on your door!

As always, if you have computer issues you need help with, give us a call on 1300 275 449. We’re always ready to help you!

Defragmenting your hard drive is the equivalent of
re-organising a filing cabinet to make it easier to find documents. It is a great way to improve the performance of your computer if it starts to run slowly after a few months usage.

One of the best things about having a wired or wireless network set up by Gizmo is that you can share folders between computers on your network. This lets you play music stored on your desktop while using your laptop in the kitchen or work on a document while the kids play games. This article walks you through how to share a folder.

on the couch

This week we are on the couch with Liam Gilligan from the Gizmo office in Canberra

What is your role at Gizmo?

I have the unusual role of being both a Senior Gizmotech and the Canberra Team Leader. I am responsible for making technology as easy to use and as fun as possible for the residents of Canberra.

What attracted you to the IT industry?

I have been interested in computers for as long as I can remember. It's great to be in a role where I get to help others feel more comfortable with their technology.

What are your five favourite websites and why?
  1. www.google.com –I would be lost without Google. Sometimes I think it's my only friend.
  2. www.smh.com.au – I feel lost if I don't know what is going on around me and when I read the news online, it's free!
  3. www.stickcricket.com – At the height of world cup fever, this one has to be mentioned. A great way to whittle away the hours!
  4. www.abc.net.au– I have become hooked on podcasting. I subscribe to podcasts from almost every radio show on every ABC channel.
  5. www.imdb.com–Contains absolutely every piece of useless information about every actor, TV show and movie ever made. A great source of help if you ever get stuck while playing "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon".

What do you never leave home without?

I’m sad to say that I never leave home without my handkerchief. I have no excuse - I'm an old fashioned guy stuck in a techie's body!

What is your dream holiday destination?

So many to choose from... This year it would have to be France for the Rugby World Cup, with a stopover in England for the Glastonbury music festival. In this dream holiday, Pink Floyd will re-form to play and, somehow, I land a backstage pass. Given that's not going to happen a camping and canoeing trip with a couple of mates somewhere in South America, absolutely roughing it - mano-a-jungle – would be awesome.

What are your interests outside work?

I am a rugby fan (Go the Brumbies!). I love vegging out in front of the TV, music and watching a good movie. Lately I have found the game ‘Ghost Recon 2’ on Xbox360 which has been taking up a lot of my time.

Finish this sentence. Working at Gizmo is…?

Like my home away from home.
